Jubilee pilgrimage of Greek Catholics in Rome

Heritage of the Fathers, preserve it for us, Lord!

In the Basilica where Saints Cyril and Methodius brought the liturgical books in the language of our ancestors to Pope Hadrian, Archbishop Vasiľ recalled that it was here that the spiritual history of our nation symbolically began. "On the altar of this Basilica, Pope Hadrian placed the books that Saints Cyril and Methodius brought him in the language of our ancestors. The language of our ancestors was recognized as capable of carrying the Word of God within it," he emphasized.
He pointed to the exceptional nature of the emergence of Slavic literacy, which appeared from the very beginning in a sophisticated form capable of conveying biblical, legal, and theological texts.

He recalled that the birth of the script was the result of the union of God's wisdom and human intelligence. "The Byzantine Emperor Michael III sent the brothers to Rastislav with the words: Receive a gift greater and more valuable than all gold and silver. This gift—the script—became the bearer of the Word of God, which consecrated our language and culture," he said.

In his homily, he also touched upon the roots of European culture, which grew out of the Christian view of man as a creation of God endowed with dignity and freedom.

"Europe arrived at the formulation of its values precisely thanks to Christianity," he stressed. According to Archbishop Vasiľ, today's Europe faces two great temptations—the absolute regulation of life and the relativization of freedom. "While excessive regulation suppresses individuality, freedom without values leads to chaos and decline," he added.

Finally, Monsignor Vasiľ encouraged the faithful to take the Word of God as a gift from the jubilee pilgrimage, a gift that strengthens faith, trust, and hope. "Let us take the Word of God from this place as a word of joy, dignity, trust in God and in our own strength. Heritage of the Fathers, preserve it for us, Lord!" he concluded his homily.
